My favoritearea is the living room. It's bright, colorful, eclectic andcomfortable. I like that I was able to mix in a lot: French,Asian, Modern, Traditional, High and Low. Since my apartment is anopen loft, I have a full view of the space from my sofa. I'mable to appreciate each item and textile. While I was designingthe space, I'd often sit in the living room and mentally rearrange andcompose the loft in my head.

I love everysingle textile in my space. I mixed a lot of color and patternand really experimented and pushed my limits. But my favoritehas got to be my Nina Campbell Paradiso Wallpaper. I've admiredit for so long and was so excited to use it in my space. I lovethat the colors coordinate with my other pieces, but also don't quitematch.

Similar to mytextiles, I have a lot of art and each piece is so special tome. I'm lucky to have a lot of original art. I suppose ifI had to play favorites, it would be "The Ladies." I found thispainting in my grandmother's basement. I love the pinkbackground, the frame, and the fact that each lady (or fella) in thepainting is different. I notice something different in it eachtime I gaze at it.

Man- this ishard! I truly do love every piece of furniture I own. Mybar cart was a particularly special score as I won it at a furnitureauction. I had wanted my own beverage station for awhile, butwas holding out for something special and inexpensive. I luckedout with this vintage gold bamboo piece. I bid $150 and won andthen proceeded to celebrate like a crazy person in front ofstrangers.

I'm prettyobsessed with my vintage pagoda. It's one of those little thingsthat make me ridiculously happy for no real reason. Wedding Wednesday

With 227 days until my wedding (yeah I am counting) I am trying to start getting into a body and skin routine that will get me to a place I am happy with for the big day. In terms of body, I am eating a lot of pizza and pasta and am pretty happy about it. But for my skin, I'd love some tips.

Here is my current process.

Remove all make up with Neutrogena Makeup Remover Wipes

Cetaphil Face Wash with my Clarisonic.

Then I moisturize with Cetaphil face lotion.

If I am really feeling like putting in some effort, I will use this Mario Badescu face mask.

So this is were you come in, what products or procedures (non-surgical obviously) do you swear by to brighten your skin, give you a nice fake tan, soften your cheeks? Anything really. I have a very simple routine right now so I am not looking to get into 10 new products a day, but I would love some recommendations. So lets hear it!

Favorite Room

My favorite room is my den. It's the room that we spend most of our time in - we watch tv in here, I sometimes work in here {I'm writing this from the den as we speak!} As a designer, I love using my home as a testing ground for my design ideas. In this room I never set out with a specific design plan - the room just came together easily with things I loved.

Favorite Textile

My favorite textile is this LOVE pillow {from Urban Outfitters.} It lives in my favorite room - my den! I love the pillow so much it has lived in lots of different rooms - my bedroom, my office - but it recently took up permanent residence in the den. The bright color and graphic print just make me smile.

Favorite Piece of Art

I've admired Carter Kustera's silhouette art at Barney's and Jonathan Adler - so when a Groupon popped up to have my own custom work of his, I had to jump at the chance! We sent him photos of ourselves in profile view, gave him a witty comment about ourselves, and voila! a few weeks later we had our own masterpieces. They hang in our bedroom bringing in a nice pop of color.

Favorite Piece of Furniture

My bed! I fell in love with the color combo of gold + navy for my bedroom. First I picked out the gold and cream wallpaper from Osborne and Little, and then had this bed made at a LA store called Room Service. I love the shape of the headboard, the rich navy blue headboard, the button tufting. I took this photo on my iPhone the day it was delivered. I was so happy I was jumping up and down for joy!

Favorite Miscellaneous Item

My favorite miscellaneous item is the ceiling in my office {does that count as an item?!} I fell in love with the idea of putting star wallpaper on the ceiling, but couldn't find the right color combo to work in my house. So I called up the decorative painters I work with and they meticulously painted my ceiling using a stencil they made. I couldn't be happier with how it turned out.

Recently, I was looking through Luxe Magazine and came across this home in Chicago. It is not something I would typically be drawn to, but I found myself loving the images. The colors. The details. I couldn't take my eyes off of it all.

Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is not one of those holidays where I have a picture of Spencer and I from every year, but we do like to go out to a special little dinner. When we first graduated from college and moved back to Chicago, we didn't realize that Valentine's Day was a seriously big deal at restaurants. So a week before, Spencer tried to make reservations at about every restaurant in the entire city and we couldn't get in anywhere. We both had roommates so cooking at home wasn't the most romantic option. I just figured we'd have to celebrate the day before or the day after, until my roommate offered up her sister's reservation, she had decided to stay home and before cancelling offered it up to us.. Neither of us eat sushi, but we took the reservation. Needless to say I was a bit of a brat about celebrating at a restaurant where they served food we didn't eat.

Well, we got there and were completely surprised. The atmosphere was great, and the non-sushi menu was incredible. Turned out to be one of our very favorite meals we've ever had. So in honor of that night, we have gone there for every Valentine's Day since. Its a tradition that I look forward to every single February.

Although this restaurant isn't the most fancy, I love dressing up for Valentine's Day. It gives you a perfect excuse for a new dress and a pretty outfit. So this year, I'd like to be wearing this:

dress, watch, shoes, clutch, studs

The shoes are girly and soft, whereas the rose gold watch gives it some edge. Love the entire look! And so looking forward to our dinner.

Wedding Wednesday

Wedding makeup was one of the biggest challenges for me. My daily makeup routine includes bronzer, blush, eyeliner, mascara and chapstick. Not only is there nothing more included, I don't even own anything more. So the thought of having my makeup done for my wedding has been very intimidating. I had a trial that I wasn't happy with at all. I said I wanted to look natural, turns out natural means different things to different people. So next up I went to Carley Martin (per my friend Ashely's recommendation) and am so happy I did.

My inspiration was this picture (minus a little blush)

I like how dewy and fresh she looks. Perfectly natural. And that is exactly what I got from Carley! Even her portfolio showcases girls who have this exact look

What is your opinion on bridal makeup? Go bold? Or be natural? I definitely think its a personal decision.

Pastel Passion

I am loving winter (yeahhhh, I know, I am the only one) and all of the bright colors that are being shown, but I absolutely cannot wait for a dose of pastels this spring. It is taking all of my self control not to buy these right now!

I wrote this post 6 months ago about amazing pastel pictures and clothes but now I am dreaming of some pastely goodness in my house. A room like this would be perfect to come home to.

I love the mints, pinks, yellows and greys together. So feminine and soft. But the black leather ottoman gives it an edge and really anchors the space. I would happily move in tomorrow. Sans dog and fiance of course. They might not love as much as I do...

A quick response to yesterday's post. First of all, I am so glad you guys liked it. It was definitely out there for me, but also something I really wanted your opinion on.

Second, I don't think I articulated one particular point very well. And that is that I really love personal posts. Its how you get to know the blogger. No one ever read my blog until I started to get a bit more personal. What I don't like is people being on their soapbox. Using their blog as platform to preach. Really irks me.

Basically, most of us are coming from the same place. A blog isn't that fun unless you know a little bit about the person behind it. But a blog also isn't the place to force your personal opinions. Agreed. Thanks for sharing all of your thoughts with me, I so appreciate hearing from you all.

And now onto the regularly scheduled posting.

Today we have Jessie from The Long and Short of It sharing her favorites. This series never gets old for me. There are so many talented bloggers out there with gorgeous homes, and I feel very lucky to be able to share some of them to you. Jessie has such beautiful, colorful, southern style. Favorite Room:

My favorite room is our entry way. I put my favorite lamps in the entry way so they are the first thing you see when you walk in. The garden stools are great when I need to add some extra seating to a room. The pineapple is a symbol of hospitality and a warm welcome in the South.

Favorite Textile:

My favorite textiles are in my formal living room. I had a pair of my mom's old wing back chairs recovered at Furbish. The floral pillows are my favorite fabric of all time.

Favorite Art:

I am obsessed with these neon prints. Also, they are special to me because I picked them up on my honeymoon in Belize this summer.

Favorite Piece of Furniture:

I found this chandelier at an estate sale. It was disgusting when I brought it home. I spent a weekend cleaning all the crystals. It ended up being so worth it.

Favorite Miscellaneous Item:

I found this decanter in a thrift store. Gold polka dots make me happy!

Let's talk about blogging

I have been noticing more and more bloggers lately that post about some really personal opinions on certain matters. Things like breast feeding and politics. Things that as far as I'm concerned are not that fun to discuss. However... we want to be ourselves on our blogs. We want to attempt to stay true to who we are. Whether its a persona we created for your site, or if its the person you really are in real life, staying true themselves is a big thing for bloggers.

There are tons of different kinds of blogs. Fashion, lifestyle, interior design, food, personal, baby, mommy. The list goes on and on and on. So if I start a fashion blog and one day decide to interrupt my pretty dresses post with a post on American eating habits and how gross they are, what are you going to think? "Cool this chick has real thoughts". Or "mind your own business fashionista". Chances are, your reaction will be based on whether or not the blogger offended you in their opinionated post.

With that said. I don't really stir the pot here on TTS. Trust me, I've got plenty of opinions, and I air lots of them here when they feel applicable but most of the time if I don't like something, or disagree with something, I won't take to my blog to discuss it.

So I started to think. Why does it make me uncomfortable to see bloggers take to their blog to discuss not so pleasant topics? Well, I think its because 80% of my life is not all pretty rooms, exciting projects, playing with puppies and jetsetting with my bf. Most of it is invoicing, billing, fighting for deliveries, saving pennies to take a vacation and all those not so glamorous things that we ALL have behind our doors.

I know this is quite the random stream of consciousness but it really is silly for me to click away in disgust from some of these more opinionated posts. I am being ridiculous by avoiding the not-so-sparkly things in life.

So let me ask you the question I posed to myself. We all know you're here for the pretty (or at the very least, you're here to see me make fun of the not so pretty). So what do you think when bloggers take to their sites to get on their soap box about personal issues. Yay or nay?

**Disclaimer: YES... this post is exactly what I am complaining about. A personal, not so pretty issue, being discussed on a blog. But I'm just so darn curious.

Oh and PS, I even thought about adding some pictures to this post. See?? The non-pretty makes me cringe here. What is it?

Hi all, I am Madison from The White Ruffle, and I am so thrilled to be here today sharing some of my favorite bridesmaid bouquet ideas with you for Wedding Wednesday! Alex was so sweet to ask me to give some advice for some beautiful bouquets! I actually work for Birch Design Studio, and feel lucky to have gotten to know Alex over the course of the past few months while watching her plan her amazing wedding day!

Here are a few ideas that I compiled together for some bouquets:

There are so may different ways to create beautiful floral bouquets for your bridesmaids. It's important to have them blend with the colors of the bride's bouquet, but that doesn't necessarily mean they all need to be matchy-matchy. While matching bouquets are always a beautiful option, some brides like to stick with one color and pick different flowers for each bridesmaid, or stick with one color and do mixed flower bouquets for everyone. Or you can mix it up all together and do different flowers with different shades of similar tones! Whatever choice you make it's important your bridesmaids love the flowers as much as you do, so feel free to ask their opinion before making your choice. You can also get vases at the reception and use the bouquets for some added floral arrangements for centerpieces, or use them to spice up the bar decor!

My current favorite room is my Dining Room. While rarely used it holds some of my favorite things. My beautiful books, my gorgeous ghost chairs, and the moulding I had put on the wall.

My favorite textile is happens to be this luggage colored leather pillow that I fell in love with at Pottery Barn several years ago. Every time it gets a knick, or worn, it just looks better and better. Plus, what room couldn't use a little leather?

My Favorite piece of Art

My Favorite piece of art is also my biggest! Nicole Cohen from Sketch 42 was kind enough to make this dreamy watercolor 'Rainbow Map' for me in the bigger than life size. It makes me happy when I see it and the punch of color is just what my room Living Room needed.

My Favorite Piece of Furniture

My Favorite piece of furniture is actually the set of four Ghost Chairs that my parents gave my husband and I as our wedding gift. I had loved those chairs but could never fathom buying a set for myself. So I was blown away that after throwing us this beyond gorgeous wedding they were also going to purchase a huge gift that would make my home an even happier place.

My Favorite Miscellaneous Item

I love my disco ball! It is a little random and however when the lights hit it and they reflect on the ceiling of my house in the afternoon, I feel a little better no matter what my day has been like.

So I've been on the look out for the perfect rehearsal dinner dress. When I found this I was SOLD. I started calling stores to find it, only to find out it was Spring 2010, not 2012. Soooo disappointing. The search continues.

As I've said 65,000 times, my wedding is going to be all white... but there are so many interpretations of a white wedding. Someone I know recently got engaged and wants a white wedding but with more of a rustic garden feel.

Partial Reveal!

A little while back, Mackenzie from Design Darling fame, invited me to participate in her "design dialogues" series. As a part of the interview, I mentioned three items on my bucket list. One of which was to have my work published in a magazine. And well, today, I am here to say that by some crazy crazy twist of fate, my work is being published!!!

You might have suspected this based on my secrecy about my condo, but now I can confirm it. Last month, the day before I left for Mexico, my condo was photographed for a feature in Chicago Magazine. Ummm... is this real life??? I have to say, I am still in shock.

Here is a shot of my place on the day of the shoot. Utter chaos. Yes there is a sofa in the kitchen.

So you'll have to wait until April to see most of my place, but I just couldn't wait to share the news!

In order to repay you for the 4 month wait, I am sharing pictures of the two unpublished rooms of my condo.


This space was pretty much finished when we moved in. It isn't necessarily what I would've personally chosen. But I am obsessed with our countertops, which are Quartzite. They are so insanely durable. All in all, I think it all came together nicely.

The guest bedroom has definitely been a challenge. We don't have a lot of storage space in here, so this room became the spot where we threw everything. Luckily, it has come together and I love the results. Especially that light fixture!

Had dinner at the perfect Chicago spot. YUM

Spooned with my baby dog. For the past 5 years he has never been allowed on the bed, but now that he is, I love it!

Received the most ridiculous birthday present from a friend. Nothing like a present wrapped with a sequined Chanel flower. I would've been happy with just that!

Lucite and Louis Vuitton stools. I love vintage shopping in Chicago.

Went to my bridesmaid dress fittings with all of the ladies. That's my mom and sister in the picture. My mom's completely candid reaction to a hilarious story!

Pinterest Inspiration

The other night I had a couple friends over for dinner and turned to Pinterest for menu inspiration.

I used this as my inspiration for the main dish

But I served it on top of pasta and instead of Panko bread crumbs I made my own. And I use my favorite pre-made tomato sauce to cut down on prep time. So so delicious.

I also made this as a side dish.

I also added broccoli and use a balsamic glaze instead of a regular balsamic vinaigrette. It was heavenly.

Then for dessert, I made these.

For these, I never even clicked the recipe link on Pinterest but the picture gave me a perfect jumping point. I bought Pilsbury crescent rolls put a scoop of Nutella in each one. Rolled it up and rolled it in cinnamon and sugar and then baked according to the package. Easily, one of the best things I've ever tasted and SO simple!

I highly, highly suggest any of these three dishes. I'm hungry just thinking about them.

Do you use pinterest for dinner ideas? It might be one of my favorites uses of the incredible website. If you don't have a pinterest account for some reason, let me know and I'll send over an invitation ASAP. It is amazing.

Nightstand DIY

If you weren't around yesterday, I recapped my last couple weeks.

And now today... back to normal posting!

I've been talking about my nightstand DIY for way too long to not have shared it already. So here they are. Sadly, they don't look at all that professional in person. The paint was much harder to work with than I expected, but overall, I love the look of them.

The Before:

Purchased from a thrift store. Not super cheap, but really good quality and nice storage. Definitely not my taste but we lived with them for two years.

So then I took them out to my deck. Painted them using Rustoleum White Protective Enamel Paint (gives a really nice lacquer). I had read all these reviews on blogs about how easy this stuff was to use. Wow. Not for me. It is so thick. Hard to paint evenly. It also drips. Oy. And silly me... it does not come off your hands. Ohhh and you have to let it dry for 24 hours in between coats. I needed 3. And to get 3 days of good weather in a row in Chicago. Needless to say. It was an adventure.

The After:

I purchased these new pulls for $4.78 a piece. Can of paint was $30. After that I thought they were done. But after a couple weeks I decided they needed something more. Then I saw these on a blog, $4.99 for 8. Done and done.

The makeover was $44.55. Well worth it.

I know my pictures aren't the best. But I have to keep the rest of the room under wraps :) Hope you understand!

Hiiii everyone! I'm back! I decided to take a break before the holidays and although I enjoyed the time off, I really missed blogging, very happy to be back. I have so much to share with you this week!

First, Christmas! Spencer's family has the most amazing collection of stockings. It started with his great grandmother, then his grandmother and now his mom. Each person in their family has a felt stocking with their name and character that somewhat resembles them. They are completely hand made and so incredibly special. This year I was lucky enough to have one made for me!

We opened presents and spent lots of time at the beach. It was such a fun first Christmas!

We got home Thursday night and had a couple days to rest up for NYE. We stopped by a friends party, went to a big Italian feast and visited a local piano bar. So much fun.

Hope you all had an incredible holiday! 2012 is going to be a pretty amazing year. I cannot wait to get it started.

Holiday Break

Thank you all for the well wishes. Who would've thought a couple teeth would take it out of you so much?? I've got quite the week coming up, so... I am going to take a blog break. I will be back January 2. Promise.

In the mean time some things I am looking forward to in the next two weeks

- My very first Christmas. I am Jewish and although I love a good Hanukkah, Christmas is sooooo much fun. My fiance has always been on his vacation over Christmas so we have never celebrated together. This year, I am going with them so I actually get to celebrate!!!

- I was given Christmas jammies as a birthday present. They are scary, but I will most definitely be wearing them Christmas morning. Note: these are the actual pajamas I was given. Hoody and footy. Woohoo.

- Laying out on the beach, getting a tan, eating way too much guacamole and having a few too many delicious beverages.

- An amazing opportunity that has presented itself. Hence the photoshoot! Cannot wait to share with you all!

- Celebrating New Years with friends at a cozy, delicious, cheap Italian restaurant. Perfection.

You know how stalking real life incredible weddings is such a fun past time? Well it is. I mean that's why Style Me Pretty exists. And don't get me wrong, I am a big SMP fan, but sometimes it really lacks the glamor for me. So today I have my very own SMP-type post, but its a really special one. Today, I am sharing my blogging best friend's wedding, Annie from The Now Stylebook. We have all been following along with her Wedding Wednesday posts, dying for more details, and now that she is a happily wedded lady, we get to see EVERYTHING!!

I am so honored that Annie chose TTS to debut this gorgeous wedding. Every single inch of it is perfection, and Annie is just about the most gorgeous bride I've ever seen! Congratulations to my bloggy BFF!!

Your Favorites: The Urban Slant

Well remember when I said I needed my wisdom teeth out in a couple weeks? Its become a nonnegotiable fact... they are coming out this morning. I've got my posts for today and tomorrow set up (because they are too good not to share) but I am going to be taking off Thursday and Friday. Hope you don't mind too much!

Today I am sharing a very special "Your Favorites", Julia and I grew up next to each other! We didn't know each other very well when we were neighbors but connected recently via blogging. Such a small little world. Julia has recently started her own amazing blog, The Urban Slant, that you definitely need to suggest. Its her take on living in NYC, so much goodness! And one very special part of this, Julia was my very first E-Design client! I gave her a little direction for her living room but she really took it ran!

Hi! I'm Julia from the lifestyle blog the Urban Slant! I was absolutely thrilled, and honored, when Alex asked me to participate in "Your Favorites". It is one of my favorite blogger series, and this post has extra special love behind it.When I moved to NYC, I desperately needed interior design advice. Now who should I turn to...?? That was the easy part! Alex, of course. Alex and I were neighbors growing up, and I've loved seeing her turn her passion for design into a reality. After many email exchanges, she helped me find cute odds and ends for my place, as well as a rug to anchor it all together, and some furniture, too!It has taken me six months to get my apartment to a place where I'm thrilled to photograph it. I was totally OCD with everything I picked out, and while it will always be a work in progress (thanks to my new passion for design), I'm ecstatic with how it all turned out.Given that Alex had a special part in designing my apartment, I thought her blog would be the perfect place to "reveal" it, if you will. I'm just so lucky she said yes!

I chose my Society Social "Marilyn" chair as my favorite piece because it is the last thing I bought -- just a few weeks ago! I had a dinky old Ikea chair that saw its last life in college, and it had to go. I love how simple this chair is, yet SO feminine with the pink trim. Not to mention it goes swimmingly with the #livesparkly pillow.

The one thing I knew I wanted in my apartment was a gallery wall. I found myself daydreaming about what prints to include, and how to arrange them. Confession: I just hung it up this weekend! Better late than never, right? I love the mix of prints -- including a special piece my Mom painted. I anchored the wall around a Leigh Viner print -- she's SO talented. I also have a print by Alaina, a local Brooklyn Artist (not sure who since I bought it at the flea market), and Nicole Cohen.

Now that I live in NYC, I love having a few reminders of where I came from: Chicago! My Mom sent me this subway sign that is on an old piece of linen, and I love it. It hangs in my tiny kitchen, and makes me smile each time I see it. Oh, and I had to add one of the prints I have that hangs above my couch --- how cute (I also have a Dallas one)? (via)

My favorite miscellaneous items are actually two -- sorry, I couldn't pick! The first are the Zhush sunbursts that I bought in all three sizes in. They are meant to be hung on a wall, but I found they were much happier as book toppers. They are one of my favorite purchases, and they are very well priced too! The horn is a super random thing I picked up at the Brooklyn Flea market this summer. I just love how rustic it is.

Finally, my favorite room is the living/dining room. Since I live in NYC, I don't have separate rooms for these. I am blessed to have enough space however. I love how the rooms flow together. The rug is so gorgeous, and I am obsessed with my ghost chairs. Buying four of them was a little damaging to my wallet, but I know I will have them forever. They are the best thing I did for the table. The mirror I purchased on One Kings Lane, and weighs about 2 tons - seriously, I had to have someone come hang it for me (even my Dad couldn't do it -- sorry Dad!).I leave you with another favorite that keeps me going each day, and makes me count each and every one of my blessings: the view out my window. I don't know how I scored such a picturesque view, but I'll take it!

I have to give a HUGE thank you to the talented Elizabeth O'Brien who spent her Sunday generously photographing my apartment. She knew exactly the angles to capture, and should seriously quit her day job and pursue a career in photography -- am I right?! Weekend Recap

This weekend I finished up a little holiday decorating. Sadly, we couldn't go all out this year like I usually like to because we have something coming up that won't allow it. Tears. But we made due, and made it purdy.

I also went to a couple fun little holiday events! Lots of fun reasons to get dressed up.

Oh and... One of my favorite shops is having a 30% off EVERYTHING sale. I mean, run. Do it. Everything at Pieces is insane.

Your Favorites: Simply Smitten

Today I have a very talented lady here to share her beautiful apartment. Kristin, from Simply Smitten, is sort of a superhero. She went through the same program as I did at Harrington College of Design, all while continuing her full time job. I barely survived while giving 100% of my time to school, can't imagine balancing it with a job!! So very impressive. And here is her gorgeous home:

Hello Things That Sparkle readers! I'm Kristin from Simply Smitten and I'm absolutely thrilled that Alex invited me share with you a few of my favorite things. If you are familiar with my blog then you know that I love to mix vintage, antique and modern pieces to create a cozy, layered look. I moved into my apartment in July so it's still a work in progress but I wanted to share with you my vision so far!

My living room is by far my favorite space. It's the one room in the apartment that feels the most complete. It's the very first room people see when they walk into my home so I really wanted it to reflect me and be filled with the things I love. The architecture is far more modern than anything I ever thought I would like but it's a great space and the 10ft windows offer lots of natural light. I kept the walls bright white (I rent and didn't want to have to repaint when I move) and added color and texture with my rotating collection of art, pillows, throws and fresh flowers. I love each and every piece in it, including...

this gorgeous 1950's velvet chair that I inherited from my great aunt. The chair doesn't really match anything in the room but that's why I love it. I think every room should have one great odd chair.

I like for the artwork in my apartment to have some kind of meaning. This painting holds a special place in my heart not only because it was given to me by my mother but because it almost feels like it was made just for me. I have the world's cutest Boston Terrier named Pinkie (note the pink background) so every time I look at this piece I think of her and it makes me smile. It hangs next to my bed so it's the first thing I see when I wake up and the last thing I see before I go to bed at night.

My favorite object has to be this Haeger urn I scored at the Broadway Antique Market for a mere $20. It's quite possibly the most useful thing I own. You can put just about anything in it and it will instantly look chic. Here it holds a bunch of magnolia leaves but it also makes a great ice bucket!

My home continues to evolve with every new purchase and treasure I find. You can follow along on the changes by checking out the "My Home" section of my blog...I hope you'll follow along!

Waited in line (don't judge) for the most delicious doughnut I have ever tasted. Amazing.

Had a delicious brunch with my fam. This dumpling was so much fun!

Fell in love with the Christmas decorations all over the city. Ahh I love this time of year.

Finally went to Dose Market and even better, they had my favorite balloons!

It was SUCH a nice weekend. Lots of relaxation, lots of delicious food and lots of holiday fun. I love this time of year. Starting tomorrow I have two weeks of absolute chaos. Please forgive me if I fall a little behind!

PS I am going to my cake tasting tonight though... so don't feel too bad for me!! So excited!!

Vegetable Soup

This soup is really delicious. Its got lots of veggies, and protein from the garbanzo beans, and was really easy and quick to make.

You will need:

1 large onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1 lb spinach, fresh or frozen, defrosted
1/2 lb of orzo pasta
1 quarts chicken or vegetable stock
1 quarts water
olive oil
1 can of garbanzo beans
1 large zucchini chopped in to bite size pieces
1 pesto (basil, pine nuts, garlic, parmesan cheese)
Salt
Pepper
1 tablespoon of oregano

Directions:
Preheat a large pan. Drizzle with olive oil. Add onions and saute until tender. Add garlic and saute for 2 – 3 minutes. Add zucchini, spinach, oregano, salt and pepper, chicken or vegetable stock and water. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to medium. Add orzo cook for 12 – 15 minutes, or until orzo is tender. Add garbanzo beans at the end, cook until they are tender. They can become mushy easily.

When it is done, drizzle with pesto and a bit of parmesan cheese. I served with grilled cheese (goat cheese and fresh basil on ciabatta, its a favorite)

Today is my little sister's 21st birthday and in honor of this glorious day I have devoted Wedding Wednesday to one of my favorite maids of honor. Little Miss K loves wedding planning as much as I do and although she is quite a ways away from planning her special day, she has already chosen her colors and time of year. Don't judge. It runs in the family.

So here is the inspiration board I put together for a navy and white winter affair. Its a little bit heavenly isn't it? And PS when I was shopping for wedding dresses we most definitely found Miss K's dress too. Normal.

Hello fellow sparklies! I'm Erika from small shop, just thrilled that Alex invited me over to share with you a few of my favorite things. If you are familiar with my blog and style, then you know that I'm all about a bit of glam in my life, mixed with a touch of pattern and color, and lots o' brass.

I love our dining room because it was the easiest room in the house! It seemed to come together naturally, and I love each and every piece in it, including the 1970's Italian ice bucket, dishes from my grandmother's china set, a vintage brass mushroom lamp, a pair of Lucite candlesticks, 1980's napkins from Spain, antique Port glasses, monogrammed lowball glasses, DIY 1970's framed photographs, my very first original artwork purchase, and of course...

I suppose it would be obvious that my favorite textile in the house is the iconic David Hicks La Fiorentina in ivory/bark. These pillows were not meant to go in the dining room initially, but have definitely found their home there, and add just the right amount of interest that will never go out of style.

Now we move into my office where I installed a gallery wall of art including paintings on canvas by my daughter, a sketch of the Trevi Fountain in Rome I drew on our honeymoon, an abstracted Vanity Fair spread by Lauren DiCioccio, an original abstract by artist Erin Ashley, cheap DIY pieces from an old Vogue calendar, a gift from Jen Ramos of MadeByGirl, and this crayon scribble I found in my daughter's sketchpad quite randomly one day. She was younger than 2 at the time (she's almost 3 now) and it seemed so spontaneous and free, yet with a strong sense of purpose--just like my daughter!

I am extremely fortunate to have inherited this gorgeous 1950's teak buffet that my grandfather shipped to me all the way from Hawaii last summer. (And if it could get any better: it came with my grandmother's hand-painted gold-rimmed 12-piece bone china set!) I bought and refurbished the lamp bases from Ebay just to have something worthy to sit atop it!

I'd have to choose the pair of brass mushroom lamps I scored at a local vintage shop for $112. I kind of bought them on a whim, really only needing one for my desk (the other is in the dining room, shown up top). They will be together again one day!

I am going to check out a day early for Thanksgiving, but I have to say... this week... and year was really one to be thankful for.

This week my family is all in one city, I got some incredible news (can't share quite yet, but I'm freakingggg, how annoying am I?) and I received some of the sweetest, most thoughtful feedback on my guest post on Design Darling.

This year, I got engaged to my very best friend in the world, began my dream career and met some really amazing people. I guess. I am just feeling really lucky right now.

Bench for Sale! And a recipe

Since my new bench from the Jayson warehouse sale is arriving early next week, that sadly means I have to sell the bench that is currently at the foot of my bed.

It was recently reupholstered in Kelly Wearstler's Confetti Cream and the base was painted gold.

And here is the quinoa recipe from Monday. I was hesitant to post too many recipes but since so many people requested it, here you go! And just a warning, since I didn't think I was sharing this one I didn't write down a lot of detail.

You will need:
* 1 cups of dry quinoa (this serves 4-6)
* Butternut squash
* Dried cranberries
* Toasted almonds
* Red wine vinegar
* Olive oil
* Sugar
* Salt & Pepper to taste

Directions:
Dice up butternut squash into bite size pieces, sprinkle with olive oil and salt and pepper. Roast on a cookie sheet for about 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Cook quinoa according to instructions on bag/box. When quinoa and squash have completed cooking, combine with cranberries and almonds. To make dressing mix 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 1 tablespoon of red wine vinegar and 1 teaspoon of sugar. This dress isnt strong, just enough to moisten (ew I hate that word) up the salad. Serve at room temperature.

Hello Things That Sparkle readers! I'm Lara from SimplyIrresistible and I'm so excited to be sharing my favorite things.Our home is still a bit of a work in progress (progress has prettymuch stopped until we receive our wedding gifts in May and find outour home for the next five years in March) but I still love our littlehome as is!

My favorite room is our kitchen - by far! I cook dinner almost everynight, and am constantly baking up a storm, so I spend a lot of timein this room. The island is perfect for multitasking in the kitchenand looks right out onto the living room so I never feel isolated inthere. I love it.

My favorite textile is our Ralph Lauren throw. It sits on the end ofour bed and is perfect for a little cat nap. It seriously feels likesomeone took a giant cable knit sweater and wrapped it around you. Itdoesn't have too much going on design wise, but boy is itcozy.

My favorite piece of art is a toss up between two of my own projects(I actually don't have any artwork in our home besides my own.Whoops). One is a replica of Georgia O'Keeffe's Oriental Poppies. Imade this one a long time ago and it sat in my parents attic until wemoved into our apartment. I'm happy it's back. The second is a collageof wine labels that hangs in our kitchen - I'm selling a few similarpieces on my etsy shop here!

My favorite piece of furniture is our couch. We looked long andhard for the perfect couch and this one definitely lives up to ourexpectations. It has a modern look and feel but is unbelievablycomfortable. I spend a lot of time sitting on this (TV watching,blogging, eating dinner - sadly!)

My favorite object is my collection of Hermes scarfs. I have yet tofigure out how to incorporate them in our home as a piece of decor,but I'm working on it. All of my scarfs have been gifted to me overthe years and I truly believe they are the most beautiful thing Iown.

The Jayson warehouse sale. INSANITY. But so so worth it. The sofa I wanted was on sale from $4,000 to $1,500 but the fiance nixed it. BOOOO! But I did leave with a gorgeous mint velvet bench. Cannot wait for to arrive!

Butternut Squash Soup

Last night we made delicious homemade pizzas. Mine with feta and roasted veggies. Spencer's with pepperoni and mozzarella. Surprised? Anyways, we also made butternut squash soup. It was incredible. Such a perfect fall soup.

You will need:

1 (2 to 3 pound) butternut squash, peeled and seeded
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 medium onion, chopped
6 cups chicken stock (or as little as you like)
Cinnamon(or nutmeg)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Parmesan cheese

In large pot melt butter. Add onion and cook until translucent. Add 1" chunks of squash and stock (the amount of stock totally depends on the consistency you like your soup. I used a lot less than 6 cups. Maybe only 3 and it was a little too thick, sort of like baby food. Oops). Bring to a simmer and cook until squash is tender. Blend all together. Stir and season with cinnamon, salt, and pepper. Top with Parmesan cheese (gives it the perfect saltiness).

This soup is so incredibly simple and so delicious!

Today I am sharing our engagement pictures by the amazingly talented Aaron Delesie. We aren't using our pictures for the save the dates or for the guest book, we really just did it to get comfortable with Aaron before our wedding day. We definitely accomplished that goal, and in the mean time, we got some really special pictures!

You might remember that we had the most insanely ridiculous weather, and since Aaron was coming in from California we had no choice but to shoot that day. We decided to embrace the bad weather and make it part of the pictures and I am so glad we did. It made the day an adventure and I love the character that it gives to our pictures.

Your Favorites: vmac+cheese

Hey Things That Sparkle readers! Victoria from vmac+cheese here. I was so excited when Alex put out the call to anyone who'd be interested in sharing their faves on her blog. I can be a little shy about photographing my home, so this was a great opportunity to share a little bit more about myself and where I live! It was honestly tough to narrow down my favorites, and I found myself walking through my house, literally with a piece of paper, jotting down ideas. Here's what made the final cut:

Favorite Room

Definitely have to go with my office. I am lucky enough that the apartment we live in came with this random little den that the boy let me have as my own. I've converted it into a space that's truly my own -- complete with a wall of shoes, an inspiration "clipboard," and a floor to ceiling gallery wall, which I also painted peacock blue. The inspiration wall is made of just some nails, twine and clothespins. Perfect, because we rent, and I can easily take it down when we move out of this place!

Favorite textile

This was a toss up between two things. I have about a yard or so of this beautiful damask ikat fabric (P Kauffman Lunar Sky in fog, if anyone is interested) that I randomly purchased when I was out shopping with a girlfriend while visiting her in LA. It was one of those things where it was just love at first sight. I've been meaning to have a pillow made from it, but I also keep holding on to it, wondering if I'll find another small upholstery project to use it for. Since that's a textile that's not actually in use, the second favorite textile is definitely every part of my bed. I'm all about making the bed as comfortable and luxurious as possible. Best tip: indulge in higher thread count sheets purchased off of Overstock.com. You can get RIDICULOUSLY good deals on sheets there!

Favorite piece of art

Art is admittedly something we need more of in our home. I like for artwork in my apartment to have some kind of meaning, and/or to be something I find truly beautiful. Right now, that often limits us to prints and creative art projects -- I can't wait for the day when we can really invest in large, original paintings. For now, my favorite piece is this print by Tadahiro Uesugi. I'm in LOVE with his illustrations. They're colorful, feminine, and whimsical. This one, called "Against the Light," reminds me of being in Paris in the summer. My boyfriend's sister gave it to me last Christmas, and I'll cherish it forever.

Favorite piece of furniture

Can I say my bed? Okay, I sort of already did. So my other two faves are a bar cart I recently purchased from a local antique store for a steal (I walked by the store window, and they had JUST put it in the display...they were still styling it when I walked in and said I wanted it!), and a long coffee table we have in our front living room. It's sleek, super high gloss white, and I like it because I think it's something we'll have for a long time (and can go with lots of different decor styles).

Favorite miscellaneous item

My grandmother has an enviable collection of antique and costume jewelry, and in the last few years, she's begun giving me pieces of it whenever I visit. On my last visit to her house, I was honored when she gifted me with these two. The first is an antique necklace that belonged to her grandmother (so, my great-great grandmother) in the 1920s. It's an amber and gold pendant, and I've literally been wearing it nonstop since she gave it to me. I love it. The second is even more sentimental. It's a gold and diamond wristwatch my late grandfather gifted her for their 25th wedding anniversary. The back is inscribed with a message of love from him to her. It's so beautiful and it means so much to me that she wanted me to have it. These two things, along with the other items she's gifted me from her collection over the years, are definitely favorites.

3. Glitter manicures. Seriously you should see my nails right now. I look like human confetti. Its great. But these nails would be a pretty good second option.

4. This delicious tomato soup that I made the other night from Lara's recipe. I added grilled cheese on ciabatta with goat cheese and fresh basil. YUM.

5. This dress from The Edit, technically its "resort" but I'm going to wear it with black tights for a holiday party! PS how awkward is this model??

Paris!

I can't really say enough about my 3 days in Paris. It was so incredibly special. It is really a magical place. Spencer and I had so much fun celebrating our engagement, wandering around the city, getting lost on the most beautiful little streets, eating way too many croissants and drinking a little (ok a lot) too much champagne! It was perfect. All of it. I will be forever grateful to my grandparents for such a special gift.

I am so happy to report that my doggy is home! He is shaved and has lots of stitches, but the baby barely even realizes anything happened, he's so happy. Thank you all SO much for your well wishes for the little man. And now I'll stop the dog talk. All you non-pet people (is there such a thing??) probably think I am crazy!

Yesterday was sort of crazy and distracting. I took my doggy to the vet for some tests for a breathing issue he had, and a couple hours later he was going in for emergency surgery. All in all not a very fun day. But I just got a call from the intensive care unit that he's in and they said he's doing great! And will most likely come home today! I feel so much better. Those pups are really like our children aren't they?

Anyways. When I have a little more time, I will make sure to put together a perfect Wedding Wednesday for you all, today its just not going to happen.

And tonight is the opening party of the clothing store I designed, so hopefully I will have pictures to share VERY soon!

Apple Crumble

It seems like the last couple recipes I've posted have been well received, so until someone says stop posting simple silly recipes, I will keep going.

Last night, I made the most delicious apple crumble. It has been a go-to for me the past couple years. So easy and SO delicious. I have absolutely no memory of where I found this recipe, but I know I've changed it quite a bit over the years.

Ingredients:

4 cups sliced tart apples (about 4 medium - I use GrannySmith)

3/4 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

3/4 cup old-fashioned oats

3/4 teaspoon cinnamon

3/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1/3 cup butter softened

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Arrange sliced apples ingreased 8" x 8" square pan. Mix dry ingredients and then add 1/2 cup of softened butter to create topping. Sprinkle evenly over apples. Pour the rest of the butter over the top of everything. Bake for 30 minutes or until topping isgolden brown and apples are tender.

Well, my internet is back and so is my life. I am SO sorry for not posting last week, not commenting, no doing anything really. But now I am back and here is a little glimpse into my internet-less life for the past two weeks!

The incredibly talented Danielle Moss (photographed) and Alaina Kaczmarski (styled) my condo last weekend. These girls are seriously amazing. I'm impressed.

Enjoyed the last days of this amazing Indian summer. 80 degrees in October was heavenly.

So today I am posting from a friend's, but I wanted to at least be back for Wedding Wednesday, my favorite day of the week! Today, I am sharing with you how I asked my bridesmaids. I asked for some assistance on here, but I ultimately decided to do something very low key.

I ordered these beautiful cards from Rifle Paper Co.

And wrote each of the girls, who are all my family (or future family), a letter asking them to be part of my bridal party.

Very simple. But... I've got lots in store for these ladies.

This week has been a crazy one!

So apparently my grandparents can read minds, or my blog, or something like that, because we received the most incredible engagement present EVER. A weekend trip to PARIS!!!

Remember when I wrote about Paris in the fall here and here. Ummm yeahhh!

And we leave in 3 weeks. I am still in shock. I feel so incredibly lucky and speechless.
